After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865, Congress passed the Thirteen Amendment, granting all slaves citizenship.  This was not well received in the South, were racism was still a big issue.

This caused the Jim Crow Laws to be enacted, as well as the start of segregation, which lasted until 1964, when the Civil Rights Act was enacted.
